KISSOLOGY: THE ULTIMATE KISS COLLECTION VOL.1 (1974-1977)
VH1 Classic Records/Universal Music Group VH-00124 (USA, 10/31/2006)
RIAA Certification:
6X Platinum. Certified Platinum 1/19/07.
Notes:
"KISSology" was supposed to be the answer to many fans dreams, however, as is usual within the KISS Army its release set off many a discussion about the contents, what was done to the contents, and the quality of the contents. Well, actually, those discussions started well before the release date with many a judgement being made without evidence. "KISSology" certainly goes a long way towards answering the demands of many fans!
"KISSology," appropriately, kicks off with a heavily doctored and grainy performance of "Acrobat" from Long Beach Auditorium on February 17, 1974. This was KISS' first performance on the West Coast and came after their first Canadian tour. Gene suggests, "our touring schedule was so intense that by the time we got to the West Coast, we were doing five or six shows a week" ("KISSology" liner notes). Not really. The February 17 show was the first that KISS had played since Manitoba eleven nights earlier. While travel and rehearsals were certainly part of the interim, the band certainly weren't doing what Gene suggested. Regardless, the show combines Super8 footage with audio from the FM broadcast from Lafayette's Music Room in Memphis, TN, on April 18. The Super8 footage comes from a 27 minute source that was originally auctioned on Ebay in 2000. It had previously been married to audio by fans. The footage is also, IMO, not as good in terms of quality as the 17 silent minutes released on the 2001 unofficial "The Vintage" DVD.
Four days later the band filmed their first national television appearance for Dick Clark in Los Angeles. It's unfortunate that "Deuce" remains lost, and Paul's "Hey World, we're KISS" is missing, but "Nothin' To Lose," "Firehouse," and "Black Diamond." These have long circulated unofficially. The edited part of the first verse, "But once I got a baby / I, I tried every way / She didn't wanna do it / But she did anyway-yeah-yay" remains removed. There really isn't much to say about this footage. It's a very important part of KISStory, regardless of how many times it's been seen before.
KISS appearance on the Mike Douglas show was filmed in late-April 1974 during a brief break in touring activities. This show has previously circulated and is heavily edited on "KISSology," though Totie Field's hilarious "nice Jewish boy" comment remains. Missing is the segment with the kissing contest winners, the whole purpose of the interview in the first place. Though Vinnie and Louise are certainly secondary to KISS' performance of "Firehouse." The whole of the show was released in 2003 on the "Lost 1976 Concert" DVD that incidentally features part of a KISS show from Jersey City from July 1976...

Initial pressings at the majority of vendors will have this show extract. This show was KISS' triumphant return to their hometown after "making it" during the "Rock And Roll Over" tour. Like the Cobo bonus disc this one is also un-chaptered...

The "Bonus Buy" bonus, night one from KISS' "Alive!" tour stand in Detroit which is rather annoyingly un-chaptered (but since it's a freebie there shouldn't be any complaints, right?).
