Like the "KISS Album Focus" before it, this work has its roots in an online feature created solely for the KISSFAQ website (apart from some of the original feature's song entries being translated and reproduced in the excellent Japanese fanzine LF, Issue #127, Feb. 2002).

Some of the songs and demos discussed in this work were previously mentioned, briefly at least (if at all), in the "KISS Album Focus" book first published in May 2002 (and the Second and Third Editions, published December 2002 and January 2005 respectively). Some other publications have also made some brief mention concerning KISS' catalog and the band's unreleased material, notably several articles and interviews that have appeared in Goldmine Magazine (a Krause publication, with excellent interviews by the renowned Ken Sharp). This work should be considered something of a companion piece to the KISS Album Focus since it also goes into some of the stories behind the songs and demos KISS and its related bands recorded.

Introduction

Welcome to KISSFAQ.COM's KISS & Related Recordings Focus, which is intended to be a companion piece of the KISS Album Focus. Like that work, parts of this feature have been published in an extended format (see link at left). This online version also serves to note the material surfacing after the final publication of the book(s), since new material is always surfacing.

Gene and Paul have often found it amusing to be asked by fans whether they'll be releasing such-or-such a song, often one that they've never written. Rumors of recorded tracks of both KISS and the related bands have often become accepted as fact - proof of real obscure recordings! The use of sources that include the band members, talking about material and other evidence, helps try and weed out the "phantoms" from the real songs. One of the most notable examples of this can be seen with how "Rockin' With The Boys" has become accepted as the title for a rock album KISS were working on prior to the "Elder" tangent (the reader can replace the word "tangent" with the word "fiasco" should they so desire). The earliest credible source (a Kerrang magazine article) actually reports the title as simply being a song demo Ace was working on during 1982. Gene has denied all knowlege of this title every being considered for use by the band...

The aim of KISS & Related Recordings Focus is to explore the unreleased material related to KISS. This allows us to dig into the demo recordings, or obscure album tracks, of all of the members of KISS, past and present, prior to and following their tenures in the band. Also covered are certain songs that have only been written, not recorded, and some songs which were re-recorded specifically for or during live television/radio broadcasts and other sessions. Like the KISS Album Focus, one of the main aims of this work is accuracy based on the comments of the band members, song-writers, and producers wherever possible. Thus, "out of their own mouths" or "through their own comments" the evidence is compiled when discussing topics - note that the members often remember things differently now, years after the fact.

Some of these demo/song entries fans may have heard of, and even heard, but perhaps you didn't know where the songs came from, how they developed, or whether the band members had ever commented on them. KISS & Related Recordings Focus will hopefully answer many questions and clear up more KISS urban legends! Also noted in the work are which of the demos recorded currently circulate in "unofficial trading circles" (vis Bootlegs). What does that mean? It means that the material is out there and if the reader wants to hear or see it then you'll have to look for it. KISSFAQ cannot help you any further than that (sorry).

If you use information appearing on this news page, in print (fanzines) or online, please have the courtesy to credit where it came from. If printing in fanzines, please send a copy of the issue in which this information appears to the KISSFAQ PO Box.

The author can be reached online at www.kissfaq.com for corrections, additions, comments, and feedback. I would not be so arrogant to claim that this work is complete! Quite simply there is probably so much more out there that remains either in the hands of the creators, record company and other vaults, or private non-sharing collectors. That explains why this is the "First Edition" of this work: Like the "KISS Album Focus," the work of researching, pruning, clarifying and verifying is a never-ending process. You can hear samples of many of the songs and demos mentioned here, and in the books, on the audio page of this website.
